Kroger, one of many largest meals retailers within the US, is seeking to put money into firms set as much as “manufacture, course of or distribute upcycled client meals merchandise”.
By 1 April, corporations within the space can submit an software for help and funding from a pot value US$2.5m in grants.
Denise Osterhues, president of the Kroger Zero Starvation Zero Waste Basis charity, mentioned the grocery store is “dedicated to serving to construct a extra environment friendly and resilient meals system and charitable meals system within the US and past”.
She added: “Within the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and its financial impacts, we’re extra decided than ever to direct as a lot meals as doable to its highest goal: feeding individuals. We are able to now not afford to waste surplus meals at any stage in our meals system.”
Ten start-ups shall be chosen, every receiving $100,000 in upfront “seed grant funding”. Every fledgling agency shall be eligible for an extra $100,000 grant “primarily based on achievement of recognized programme milestones”, Kroger mentioned.
The programme will final six months, on the finish of which, two start-ups shall be chosen by their cohort friends, Kroger mentioned, for a chance to obtain a further $250,000 in funding.
